The Magar's are largest indigenous people in Nepal. They have 16,22,421 Population in total (within Nepal, Source: wikipedia). They have their own language and culture,770116 speak a Magar language as their mother tongue they called themselves as " Bhumiputra" (son of land) in Nepal but still they are fighting for the their own territory and the federal stat. Since a 1990, influencing with Buddhism and they started to saying that all the Magars are Buddist and they must fallow the Buddist religion and become Buddist. Before they were Hindu and all of them fallowed the Hindu rituals. But having seen their own traditional rituals or culture and their behavior we can say they are neither Hindu nor Buddist, But they are Naturalist (Prakriti Pujak). Because they worship for the stone, wind, water, land and Jungle even they believe the spirit and ghosts. If somebody dead in a society then the priest or Dhami (a powerful person) predict that what he or she become after dead. In Magar society, they purify within 10 days and the last day of purification they know the dead person rebirth or not? To know that they need a ash or water (its depend up on region, some where they look in ash and some where they used clean water from the tap). In our context (eastern part of Nepal) most of them uses the ash to know that things and they called it Migya bhakki or Ugya bhakki (to separate the soul). Having their own power they start to calling the dead persons soul and that spirit left the symbol in ash just like mark of Dog, cat, cow, mouse, birds and etc etc. if the mark as like cat then they believe the dead person become a cat after dead (it means he or she rebirth being as a cat) same as like other.
They have some interesting culture, such as Magars are interrelated with each other. They have big kinship within a community, if the two unknown person meet in somewhere from eastern part and western part of Nepal then also they are linked with relationship, but they are unknown and they doesn't known at first that’s why they never greet each other as like hindu culture (saying Namaste at first). After having some chat they started to ask their surname, mother's surname, grandmother's surname and brother in lows surname and they finalized their real relationship. For example I met somebody Darlami or Ale in somewhere and s/he is unknown then I don't great at first when I met up but sitting together or after having chitchat I started to know him/her asking their surname and I recognized that s/he is my maternal relatives and I need to great them being polite. Why I'm writing all these above Is, I have reason that to write, professor/ Artist Shova Chand said: "The Magars never start with Shree Ganeshaye Nama as like Hindu but they analyzed the things before and then they start" .
yes they are.
Yes, I also wondered when I heard that first time but I feel it and analyzed it and finally realized "oh yes" it's true :) , another interesting part is that there are 3 types of TENSE in English and Nepali but Magar has only Two types of "TENSE" and they are past and non past. I never think that much deep in grammar, I used to saying that "I'm the person who Love the Magar language Literature" but I felt shy when I knew it then i left to say that i'm the Magar language and literature lover :). Because when I was writing usually I was following the rules as like Nepali and English. Now I knew that its differ from others and the word " Tense" giving me more tense, not only me most of all the Magar writer usually follow the same rule so we need to more debate and discussion about it and make the clarity on "Magartwo". Because some of the elites say that Magar has their own script that is Brahmi script, but some of them still ignoring it. same as some of the Magar forcedly saying that their own religion is Buddhist and all the Magar must follow them but some of them still in mix religion as like they follow the Buddist, Hindu and Naturalism (Prakriti Pujak) because they still celebrate the festival Dashain and Tihar, chaite dashain same as Saune sakranti, Maghe sankranti and Baishake purnima.
The interesting thing is that some of Magar elites saying that Magar are new generation of Lord Buddha. They write and forcedly made a rule on Magar Organization and started to saying that they are Buddist. Hinduism is forcedly placed by Hindu. Yes, I agree that the Hindu culture is forcedly placed us by so called high cast Bramhin's and chhetries of Nepal to established their one Language, One state though they (Magar) worship for their "Kul" at the Baishak Purnima. I wonder how they become Buddist too? If they are Buddist then they shouldn't cut the ship, buffalo, pig or chicken at that day for their KUL because Buddha believe in peace and I never heard that to cut the animals is allow in Buddha's Philosophy. Also the real Buddhist (Sherpa, Tamang, Gurung and Bhote) pray in Gumba, their ritual ceremonies similar but we (Magar) never made a Gumba in our society and Magar's all the cultures are far different than them. And still one question always ringing on my mind, Buddha was burn 2500 years ago and Magar's history is longer than that and how they become Magar's are generation of Lord Buddha. Then, Magar's didn't have religion before? I agree, religion and costumes discovered later but what they were follow before? I agree that Buddha's philosophy is great and we anyone can follow the good things but its myth to say we are the son of Buddha.
Whatever, lots of things need to more discussion within Magar elites and most important to finalized who are Magar and what their original religion is?
